As for the father he was an insipid, spineless, deluded man. So was it nature or nuture? At first I wasn't sure about the approach to the story but after a few chapters and when Liesel joined the Hubermann household I was hooked. Wasn't it a novel idea to have death as the narrator? My imagination conjures up a foreboding and sinister image of death but here he was likeable. For a finish as well as feeling sorrow for the other characters I equally felt sorrow for death. I'm glad I read this book. </p> <p>As for the illustrations. Hmm, found them a bit surplus to requiements! I fell in love with each character within the book especially Rudy and Papa. It is such a moving story and when I finished the book, it made it all the more poignant to think that it is only 1 story from a time when I'm sure there were thousands more of a similar nature.
