I like Col's category 'Pauser' as I sometimes fall into that category! But what would you call it if you had a book in a pile for 5 years and having finally read it realized it was a true gem and you never guessed.The book in question is Gerard Donovan's Schopenhauer's telescope.This is a very unusual read.There are really only 2 characters -one digging a hole and the other watching him.Let that not put you off....    The story uses many clever techniques including interview,debate,role play between the teacher and a baker.You suspect the ending may not be a happy one but there's a sweet little love story towards the end which brings some relief to a story taking place in freezing and tough conditions.Many topics are aired including Philosophy ,Religion and History.Nature and Nurture comes to mind too.There is a huge sense of place though no place is actually named.Having read Julius Winsome by the same author and having loved the language in that I wonder what kept me so long getting around to reading this treasure!{though his short stories didn't really grab me at all....}

I'll add a third category... I'm a 'Pauser'. I have a pile of books beside my bed that are half read, and not finished for some reason, usually because I became distracted by another book (usually the one above it in the pile). I refuse to admit that I won't be going back to them, so they sit half-read, with a bookmark patiently waiting for my return.

Hi there - I'm currently reading Midnight's children by Salmen Rushdie...I'm struggling. On about page 190 of 700 and I can't see myself getting to the end, though I really want to. I'm a Finisher, not a ditcher, and hate to leave a book once I've started. If anyone has read this book I'd love to know what they thought - and if they think it is worth preserving with?

I'm a ditcher and no apologies! Some I ditched are:
The Life of Pi - I tried and tried but could not get into it
Tuesdays with Morrie - actually I didn't but wish I had!
The God of Small Things - another I wish I hadn't persisted with. That line "a sophie-shaped hole in the universe" just bugged me!

Hi Fudge
I read Shadow of the Wind a couple of years ago and loved it! I think it is a book you need to sit down and read large chunks to get the momentum going. Initially I was getting confused with the Spanish names etc but it is a great old read once you get stuck in.
I have tried John McGahern's 'That they may face the Rising Sun'a number of times because I had read great reviews and I loved 'Amongs Women'. Should I try again?

Funny I loved both The Historian and The Time Traveller's Wife. Had to put White Teeth to one side though and never went back to it either. Haven't yet managed Birdsong either. I usually know pretty quickly whether or not I will enjoy reading something, but most of the time I do try to stick with them. I always feel like I might miss something if I don't keep going!

Its mad to see some of the books others have loved/hated. I liked Marley & me as it was so diff to what I normally read, loved loved The Book Thief & Time Travellers Wife but didn't like White Teeth. Eat Pray Love was very indulgent but again so diff to the norm it was interesting.

1st post - thanks Ingrid for telling me about Eileen's new endeavor!!
I am nearly always a finisher although seriously struggling to get into Eat Pray Love... love the idea of it, but it's a little self indulgent for me!
I could never get past the first 2 champters of the Lord of the Rings (I also tend to fall asleep after the first 2o mins of the movie though!)

99% of the time I'm a finisher. If I get past the first few pages I get less fussy and can put up with most things.
Occasionally something is just too much hard work though - maybe once a year I'll find something I just can't get through.
I do remember picking up a Patricia Scanlan book years ago and in the first few pages the character went out on to the balcony and inhaled the morning air "like a smoker inhaling the first cigarette of the day". I haven't tried reading any of her stuff since, though I'm quite happy to read other chick lit!

I'm generally a finisher but there are a few books that i just haven't been able to finish

Middlesex - completely lost interest in it 2/3 of the way through
the time travellers wife - have tried 3 times but just can't get into it
The lord of the rings - ditto

recently forced myself to finish The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd - what a waste of time. I was really disappointed with the book because i'd so enjoyed the Secret Life of Bees.

on the flip side of ditching books - i struggled with a History of Tractors in Ukrainian and gave up on it but when i went back to it, i was much more absorbed by the characters and the plot and really enjoyed it.

Claire- I started a dedicated thread for The White Tiger.

Carizza, snap! I love books, love dogs, but not necessarily a good combination! Although one of my favourite books is 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime' but that's not really a dog themed book.

I think Niamhie is right, it's a collection of stories. I think if I'd known that before going into it I would've enjoyed it more. (I heard the movie is a bit of weepy alright!)

I loved it! It is a feel good kind of book. There's no real plot, it's more a collection of stories. Didn't cry at the book ... but did at the movie!

Eileen, is it as saccherine as I think it is?

I love books.
I love dogs.

I HATE books about dogs. Sappy, inspid and written solely for the film rights, it would seem.
