A Good Holiday Book?

  1. Hi, I'm heading on holidays in 3 weeks for a bit of long overdue blissful relaxation and plan on eating a few books whilst lying in the shade. I'd love some suggestions if anyone had some of good holiday reads please.

I've just finished Mister Pip and loved it and am now reading The Secret Scripture and enjoying that a lot too but will more than likely have that finished by end of the week as i'm flying through it. Have read all the good usuals, Kite runner, a 1000 splendid suns, book thief, time travellers wife and enjoyed them all and whilst i'm not really into chick lit, I have to admit a good ole love story or sordid tragic affair would do nicely as a break!

    Any help out there?

  5. Love most of Jodi Picoult books. My sister's keeper and Perfect Match really good reads as was Plain Truth. Couldnt get into Second glance and ditched it. The book Im reading at the minute is a bit boring. Bought it as a triple set and thought the first in the set was ok but this is too much of the same thing and very simple writing. Has anyone else read this trio of Shopaholics?

  6. Yeah I read them a good few years ago now and loved them. I think second glance is the one that I started myself and abandoned it but Im definitely gonna give it another go. I loved the pact by jodi picoult too.

  7. I just finished the Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, i thought it was fantastic and an easy read for a summer holiday. If you are looking for a great read, i'd recommend a book called Katherine by Anya Seton. It is part romance, part historical fiction. Its an old one but a good one!

  8. Oh no! Sorry Bookbug but I had to read 'The Notebook' for our bookclub a few months ago and I hated it! It was an easy read but I thought it was very predictable and cliched (sp?).

  10. Molly Fox's birthday by Deirdre Madden is a great holiday read.As a result I read it too fast and had nothing worthwhile left for a recent short flight! It has a likeness to Ulysses....a life in a day.[Not that I ever managed to read or even listen to Ulysses]I will definitely read other novels by this author.

  11. This month's book club choice 'Plainsong' by Kent Haruf is a great holiday read. The characters are really engaging and it's beautifully written too.

  12. Thanks a mil everyone, some great suggestions there. I ended up finishing The Secret Scripture...big disapointment, read Q&A which was good, finished it in 2 days though, then moved on to Stuart by Alexandra Masters which whilst interesting was a bit depressing for a holiday read so have put that aside for another time and finally went back to an old regular the time travellers wife. It's about 4 years since i read it and am really enjoying it the 2nd time around.

I'll definatley take your suggestions on board and start Plainsong next cos I bought that recently and will defo try and read Shadow of the Windand a Wally Lamb books (heard good reports from his books b4).

    Thanks again.
