Are you a finisher or a ditcher. Do you struggle through your impulsively selected 800 page read to the bitter end?.........or do you lob it and run for the hills? I'm afraid I tend to stuggle through. I get a funny sensation of bad Karma if I start a book and abandon a few chapters in. I do think life is too short to read bad books but on the other hand my OCD gets the better of me.

I tend to ditch. However i do sometimes struggle on......
Books in the past year that I persisted with despite temptations to ditch:The Sea by John Banville
The Accidental by Ali Smith
The Autograph Man by Zadie Smith
Everyman by Philip Roth (thankfully short)
A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina LewyckaDo I wish I had ditched? You bet!

I am a reluctant finisher, I have to see if books get any better. Pounder, I felt the same about 'The Autograph Man' by Zadie Smith, I waited for the story till the last page, and then realised it was never going to materialise!
I did ditch 'The Yacoubian Building' by Alaa el-Aswany as it was too stressful trying to remember the cast of about 100 characters! I also ditched 'The Testimony of Gideon Mac' which was a coma-inducing read.
Come to think of it...maybe I'm a ditcher??!!

Are you nuts????
Yacoubian Building was great. Like watching Eastenders in CairoPosted 2 years ago # -
I couldn't get into it, all the characters had about three names each! I just found it frustrating.

I loved 'short history of tractors in ukranian,' very original. I never intend to ditch, I leave them on the bedsidetable for a while and then end up getting interested in something else. The book is officially ditched when it lands back in the bookcase...

I'm a ditcher.
If I'm halfway in and not inclined to head to bed early just to get a chance to sneak in a few chapters before bed, a book just hasn't done it with me.
Recently, I've abandoned Middlesex (sorry, Catch). A while ago, I was about to give up on The Book Thief but finished it and shouldn't have bothered.

I'm a finisher and rarely abandon a book but if it doesn't grip me in the first two pages I'm outta there.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I also hated The Sea with a passion, but because it was relatively short and I mistakenly thought that there must be something to it if it won the Booker Prize, I stuck with it. I try to stick with a book, but if it is several hundred pages long and I'm really not enjoying it, I begin to think that life is too short....!

I'm a finisher--an eternal optimist--though there are times. . .
Posted 2 years ago # -
I've had to ditch 'Marley & Me'. Couldn't hack it.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Jaysus I wouldn't touch Marley & Me with a bargepole!
Posted 2 years ago # -
It's dreadful Pounder- keep clear!

Wrong thread I know, but how are you finding White Tiger Eileen?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Life's too short to read a boring book!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Eileen, is it as saccherine as I think it is?
I love books.
I love dogs.I HATE books about dogs. Sappy, inspid and written solely for the film rights, it would seem.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I loved it! It is a feel good kind of book. There's no real plot, it's more a collection of stories. Didn't cry at the book ... but did at the movie!
Posted 2 years ago # -
Claire- I started a dedicated thread for The White Tiger.
Carizza, snap! I love books, love dogs, but not necessarily a good combination! Although one of my favourite books is 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nightime' but that's not really a dog themed book.
I think Niamhie is right, it's a collection of stories. I think if I'd known that before going into it I would've enjoyed it more. (I heard the movie is a bit of weepy alright!)

I agree withb ingrid lifes to short to read a boring book. boring books should be banned. but in saying that i'm no ditcher once i start a book i have to finish it. As to Marley & Me its a fun flick but thats were it stops!

I'm generally a finisher but there are a few books that i just haven't been able to finish
Middlesex - completely lost interest in it 2/3 of the way through
the time travellers wife - have tried 3 times but just can't get into it
The lord of the rings - dittorecently forced myself to finish The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd - what a waste of time. I was really disappointed with the book because i'd so enjoyed the Secret Life of Bees.
on the flip side of ditching books - i struggled with a History of Tractors in Ukrainian and gave up on it but when i went back to it, i was much more absorbed by the characters and the plot and really enjoyed it.

99% of the time I'm a finisher. If I get past the first few pages I get less fussy and can put up with most things.
Occasionally something is just too much hard work though - maybe once a year I'll find something I just can't get through.
I do remember picking up a Patricia Scanlan book years ago and in the first few pages the character went out on to the balcony and inhaled the morning air "like a smoker inhaling the first cigarette of the day". I haven't tried reading any of her stuff since, though I'm quite happy to read other chick lit!Posted 2 years ago # -
Generally I'm a finisher but there's times where I just can't get into a book so I will put it back on the shelf and try something else then go back to the original book after and try it again.

Hi gang!
1st post - thanks Ingrid for telling me about Eileen's new endeavor!!
I am nearly always a finisher although seriously struggling to get into Eat Pray Love... love the idea of it, but it's a little self indulgent for me!
I could never get past the first 2 champters of the Lord of the Rings (I also tend to fall asleep after the first 2o mins of the movie though!)Posted 2 years ago # -
I'm a finisher. Regardless of how painful, I have to finish it. Same with movies. If I go to see a movie and it's terrible, I'll still wait until the end.

I am nearly always a finisher but could not get into "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova recently...anyone else the same? It is now gathering dust.
Its mad to see some of the books others have loved/hated. I liked Marley & me as it was so diff to what I normally read, loved loved The Book Thief & Time Travellers Wife but didn't like White Teeth. Eat Pray Love was very indulgent but again so diff to the norm it was interesting.Posted 2 years ago # -
Funny I loved both The Historian and The Time Traveller's Wife. Had to put White Teeth to one side though and never went back to it either. Haven't yet managed Birdsong either. I usually know pretty quickly whether or not I will enjoy reading something, but most of the time I do try to stick with them. I always feel like I might miss something if I don't keep going!

I normally finish a book but have recently put aside a book recommended to me. Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I will probably give it another go but just wondering has anyone here read it?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Hi Fudge
I read Shadow of the Wind a couple of years ago and loved it! I think it is a book you need to sit down and read large chunks to get the momentum going. Initially I was getting confused with the Spanish names etc but it is a great old read once you get stuck in.
I have tried John McGahern's 'That they may face the Rising Sun'a number of times because I had read great reviews and I loved 'Amongs Women'. Should I try again?Posted 2 years ago # -
The RTE adaption of 'Amongst Women' was brilliant. Did you see that Claire?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Yes, I did see it, with Susan Lynch wasn't it? The father was such a complex man, outrageous, but stangely believable. Adaptations don't always hit the spot, but I seem to remember liking this one
