'Spot the Book'

  1. Can you spot the books the following quotations come from?
    No.1:
'Then everyone was talking at once, about how Tommy never even tried to be creative, about how he hadn't even put anything in for the Spring Exchange. I suppose the truth was, by that stage, each of us was secretly wishing a guardian would come from the house and take him away. '

    No.2:
'This is another reason why I don't like proper novels, because they are lies about things which didn't happen and they make me feel shaky and scared.

And this is why everything I have written here is true. '

    No.3:

'I love Canada. I miss the heat of India, the food, the house lizards on the walls, the musicals on the silver screen, the cows wandering the streets, the crows cawing, even the talk of cricket matches, but I love Canada. It is a great country much too cold for good sense, inhabited by compassionate, intelligent people with bad hairdos. Anyway, I have nothing to go home to in Pondicherry.'

  2. No. 3 is 'Life of pi'. Don't know No.2. Now really want to read No.1. What is it? Good Topic, by the way!

  3. Great topic, I can't guess any of them though... I thought no 3 might be 'My year of Meats'.

  4. I googled them because I am such a cheat - but i won't let the cat out of the bag! I read No.1 a couple of years ago and enjoyed but didn't recognise it which just goes to show how much I retain of books I have read!

  5. Catch is spot-on with book No.3 :Life of Pi. Googling is definitely cheating! I was going to post clues for the other 2 but it would give the game away. Keep guessing!

  6. I want to read the first book- sounds interesting. Someone has to guess it so I can find out what it is!

  7. Is no. 2 The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime?

  8. Well played, Carizza.

    No 1. anyone?

  9. Got it!! Picked this up in Eason's on Sunday and was flicking through the first few pages when I clicked that it was No. 1 from this guessing-game. Think anyone standing next to me thought I was nuts when I slammed the book closed and loudly hissed "that's it!"

It's Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go!

  10. Carizza, I think it's your turn to post clues for some other books!Promise I won't Google this time!

  11. Ok!

Right, will start easy and get a little harder.

    No. 1:
It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen

    No. 2:
CLARE: It's hard being left behind

    No. 3:
The woman pushed on the baby's stomach and sucked its penis into her mouth; it was thinner than the American menthols she smoked and a bit slimy, like raw fish.

(OK- apologies in advance for no.3- it seems a bit risque but I bought the book because of that line; it certainly piqued my interest)

  12. No.1: 1984 by George Orwell! Great game Pounder!

    Posted 2 years ago #
  13. You're correct on no.1, Emma.1!

    Posted 2 years ago #
  14. Well done, Carizza. Not only did you get my 3, but I'm totally stumped on your No.3!

    Posted 2 years ago #
  15. It's a tough one alright, Pounder. The book is by an author well-known in a not very main-stream genre.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  16. I couldn't remember for sure if her name was Clare. Just checked my copy of the book. No.2 is Time-traveller's Wife.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  17. Correct on No. 2, Pounder.

Shall we say that whoever gets No. 3 gets to choose next?

    Posted 2 years ago #
  18. I'm fairly sure its Murakami, coin locker babies, it's the first line in the book, so its fairly memorable :)

as a new member i'm happy to wait for a confirmation tho!

still waiting for the next question

  21. sorry for the delay!

Ok i'll do three then to keep ye going!

    1.
"No electric chair for a medal of honour man," Marco said, and he began to pick his way painfully down the iron ladder listening intently for a memory of Raymond, for the faintest rustle of his ever having lived, but there was none.

    2.
Dragan Armansky was born in Croatia fifty six years ago. His father was an Armenian from Belorussia. His mother was a Bosnian muslim of Greek extraction.

    3.
I have read of men who, when forced by their calling to live for long periods in utter solitude - save for a few black faces - have made it a rule to dress regularly for dinner in order to maintain their self-respect and prevent a relapse into barbarism. It was in some such spirit, with an added touch of self-conciousness, that, at seven o'clock in the evening of 23rd September in a recent year, I was making my evening toilet in my chambers in Pall Mall.

  22. Not a notion on any of those, madigan. Stumped, I'm afraid.

    Posted 2 years ago #
  23. No. 1 has to be The Manchurian Candidates and I think No. 2 is Girl With A Dragon Tattoo?

    Posted 2 years ago #

    Posted 2 years ago #
