I'm choosing the books for the summer months and looking for some inspiration. What would you suggest would be a good summer read?

What about a meaty thriller of some sort?

This might not suit for summer reading but I looked up the Times top 100 novels, there are two lists, one by the magazine and one by the magazine readers. For all my reading I haven't managed to get through many books on the list - for the ones I have read it was so long ago they are due for a re-read as an adult. I'll be taking one book off the list everytime I stock up at the library

The Reluctant Fundamentalist - Mohsin Hamid. Great book. Sounds very heavy, but its insightful into Afghan culture v western culture without being too much. An absolute page turner.

The Pirates Daughter by Margaret Cezair Thompson. Read it in Winter, but is a real Summer read. Loved it.

I loved the Pirates Daughter too. Two books that I absolutely loved were Plainsong and Eventide by Kent Haruf. A friend lent them to me and I thought they were great examples of classic storytelling, beautifully written and had wonderful characters.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer. If ever there was a summer read - its (hate to use this word but its appropriate) delightful! Its a light read, but there's romance, history, comedy all wrapped up together... even 3 weeks after reading it I still smile when I think about it and the characters in it who I fell in love with - wish they were real!!
