I intend this book to be a discussion on the entire book including plot twists and the ending which might wreck it for someone who hasn't read the book yet. If you haven't read it, be warned! Actually, if you haven't read it, please do so ASAP- it's worth it!
Have to say, this is one of my all-time favourites and is the only book of the hundreds on my shelves that I've never, ever loaned out to anybody. My copy is much-thumbed and very much loved. I first read it about three years ago and have re-read various bits (normally the ending) quite frequently since.
When discussing this book with people, there are very mixed reactions. The general concensus seems to be that Shriver's style is very wordy (have to agree when it comes to Kevin but the rest of her work isn't to the same extent) and the first third of the book is quite slow going. I agree with this too but really found it worth sticking with.
I love Eva's honesty. I'm sure many women have found it difficult to make the decision on whether or not to have a child when they have a fulfilling life in all other aspects and I found it refreshing that it didn't turn into a typical "I was a career woman who didn't want to have kids but I did and being a mother is the best thing that ever happened to me so I gave up my multi-million dollar job and now happily finger paint all day and isn't my son just a prince?!".
I love the style of the story- the conflicts between Eva and Franklin. Kevin's relationship with his mother, sister and peers; how he acts in front of his dad and teachers. Mainly, how Kevin's influence leads to the breakdown of what was a great marriage.
The books leaves us with a lot of questions- was Kevin a monster or did Eva's indifference to motherhood make him that way? Nature or nuture?
The ending totally surprised me. That was a surprise in itself as I'm quite a cynical reader and am always looking for the twist but the honest style of the book didn't allow for much of a stab at mystery. Celia's demise was gruesome and shocking but made perfect sense; Kevin had historically destroyed everything Eva loved (like her map wallpaper) so why not detroy the two people she loved the most and just leave her with one she hated but who depended on her? The genius of evil.
Anyway, I could talk about this book all day and loved it. So, please, give me your thoughts on it; loved it? Hated it? Dropped it a hundred pages in?
